TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME WARM AND COMFORTABLE IN AUTUMN

In order to keep a house warm in a low-cost way when autumn arrives the best thing is to use traditional solutions

Essentially, it involves limiting the ways in which our body loses heat. Structural solutions, those that relate to the morphology and construction of homes are difficult to adopt on a daily basis, therefore we must adapt to the environment. If we analyse any property, no matter how old it is, we will see that the greatest heat loss occurs through the windows. Thus, curtains and blinds in winter and awnings in summer can be a great solution.

It is important to ventilate the home, not only for health reasons, but also to eliminate moisture that forms in bathrooms and kitchens. However, when there is no centralised ventilation system it is necessary to use your head. Through a single regular window, measuring 1.40x1.20m, for example, air can circulate by going out through the top and easily replace the air in a room within fifteen minutes. If we take the chance to ventilate during the hottest hours or, even better, when the sun is heating that window, we will lose minimal heat.

As part of making use of heat gained and lost, the ideal thing would be to allow the sun to enter directly through our windows by raising blinds and opening curtains when it directly hits the glass, thus allowing the rays of sunlight to get through and making the glass heat up. As soon as there is no direct exposure to sunlight, a net curtain or a light curtain can let light through without radiation losses to the outside. As soon as night falls, it is essential to lower the blinds and, if possible, close the curtains to ensure that heat is not lost through the window. Perhaps, one of the most affordable and effective solutions is to change the traditional mechanism of the blinds with a motor that has a Wi-Fi connection or that can be programmed. It is normally even cheaper than covering the window with a good lined and padded curtain, and is very convenient.

Another traditional aspect is to consider the old castles and stately homes of the Middle Ages which had beds with a canopy that provided their owners with more privacy and worked as the last source of protection against heat loss. These buildings also had good curtains and rugs to reduce heat loss. In this regard, in summer it is common to remove rugs and curtains while also taking off duvets in order not to get too hot, but it is necessary to remember that, when autumn arrives, all of this must be returned to its place before the bitter cold arrives. A parallel situation to this is when we go outside: in winter we put on a warm coat and good boots, and when summer arrives we wear lighter clothing.
